IKI RAN Information System for Support of Users of Meteorological Satellites Data

The report describes the experience of maintaining the information system, developed at Space Research Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences for support of users of meteorological satellites' data . The primary purpose of this system is support of local HRPT data acquisition stations, installed in the last years over the territory of CIS. Besides, a system for remote users' access to HRPT data is organized in Space Research Institute via the Internet. The source of satellite data for it is the NOAA HRPT receiving station, installed in the Institute. The automatic system of collection, registration and archiving of the information is realized on the station . Access to data for the remote users is organized using WWW (World Wide Web) server.

Local Tasks: Format for Storing Data Received from NOAA Series Satellites

For the tasks of local monitoring using HRPT data, the problem is to maintain a permanent archive of fragmented data relevant to certain regions of interest. The goal is to achieve data organization allowing quick and easy data selection for use, distribution and exchange. For that purpose the specialized data format TDF is proposed basing on standard TIFF specification for storage of HRPT data. The TDF format has been already implemented at SMIS Laboratory for use on personal stations for HRPT data acquisition. A data processing software package, developed for Microsoft Windows 3.1 environment, performs new format operations, including saving and reading data, extracting data from various devices, visualizing and combining them with data from other devices. Also developed were the specialized dynamic libraries (DLL), containing a large set of the procedures for handling files in this format.

Flexible System of Updating Software for Satellite Images Processing

The increasing number of users of satellite information and development of new systems of remote sensing requires frequent changes and upgrades of the software for satellite data processing. Thus on the first places come the following requirements: reduction of time expenses for software development; ease of learning new programs by the users. One of possibilities to make the process of software development more efficient is to split the required updates to several levels, so that both users and programmers can work independently on each of these levels. The report informs about the software system that implements special support for each of these levels. The system was developed in MS Windows 3.1 environment for personal station for acquisition and processing of data from the NOAA series satellites in the HRPT mode.

Adaptive system for modification of satellite images processing software

The increasing number of users of satellite information and appearance of new systems of remote sensing results in necessity of frequent changes and modernization of the software for satellite data processing. Thus on the first places come the following requirements: reduction of time of software development; ease of learning new programs by the users.
One of possibilities to make the process of software development more efficient is to split the required updates to several levels, so that both users and programmers can work independently on each of these levels. It appears useful to break all required tasks into three classes:

    1. Creating processing techniques and procedures on a basis of operations already available in the base package.
    2. Creating procedures, which cannot be represented as a sequence of standard operations, but work only with the images, not using any specific data.
    3. Creating routines and methods of processing, which operate both with the images and ancillary data (for example, complex arrays for calculation of image spectrum or cartographic information).
These three classes of tasks cover the majority of problems of image processing. For each class effective way of the decision can be chosen:
    1. Creating macros in existing program packages.
    2. Creating isolated functions, which are called dynamically from the main program. On exit the function returns control to the calling program.
    3. Development of the independent programs, capable to cooperate with the already available software.
The paper informs about the software system that implements special support for each of these tasks. The system was developed in MS Windows 3.1 environment for personal station for data acquisition and processing from the NOAA series satellites in the HRPT mode.

Data processing for personal HRPT receiving station

The papert represents the description of software package for stations for acquisition HRPT data. The package provides possibility to receive data, perform their pre-processing and thematic processing. This softwarå is currently installed on the most HRPT acquisition stations in CIS.
The package consists of the following programs:

  • PREDICT. Calculating satellites' orbits, composing schedule of satellites' passages, preparing data for dish guidance control during acquisition.
  • TRACKER. Acquisition station control, data unpacking, calibration and storage.
  • FRAME. Viewing and fragmentation of data.
  • GEOREF. Geographical referencing of acquired data and conversion into cartographic projections.
  • AVHRR. Construction and analysis of temperature fields of sea surface, the estimation of integral humidity, clouds analysis using various techniques (including those developed by the user), calculation of various statistical characteristics of temperature and cloudiness fields.
  • SPEC. Spectral and correlation analysis of various satellite images.
  • MULTI. Thematic processing of the multi-channel images for selection of similar formations (segments) and their classification, using the statistical characteristics and expert estimations.
  • XV_IMAGE. The general multi-purpose program for image processing.
The software included in the standard set of acquisition station allow the user to perform a wide range of tasks. If necessary, the user can develop his own programs using special dynamic libraries (DLL) supplied with the package, containing input/output procedures, frequently used dialogues and a range of routines for data processing. This makes it possible to supplement and modify the software for specific tasks.
The software operates in MS WINDOWS 3.1 environment.
